Creating the Illusion of More Room: Tips for a Small Space

Updated: 2 days ago

Family Wellness Tips

We moved last year. Downsizing has been refreshing but also challenging as the rooms in the new house are smaller than we are used to. It has been fun to create new spaces - and to redesign them a few times. We all know that small rooms can feel cramped and uninviting, but with a few design tricks, they can be transformed into spacious and welcoming spaces.

By making a small room look bigger, you are not only creating a more functional living space, but you are also increasing the potential resale value of your home. .

Below you will find 20 design techniques and tips for making a small room look bigger, from choosing the right colors to utilizing vertical space. Whether you're looking to improve the functionality of your home or simply want to create a more spacious living environment, making a small room look bigger is a great place to start. Let me know how it goes!

First, use light colors: Light colors like soft chamois by Benjamin Moore, on walls, ceiling, and floor can make a room feel more open and spacious. Avoid dark colors, which can make the room feel cramped and closed in. (and Benjamin Moore delivers paint!)

Add mirrors: Mirrors reflect light and create the illusion of more space. Place mirrors opposite windows or other sources of natural light to maximize their effect. I am loving the impact of a round mirror like this one for above furniture or open walls.

Keep the floor uncluttered: A cluttered floor can make a room feel smaller. Keep the floor free of unnecessary items and use furniture with exposed legs to create the illusion of more space. (Use containers for shelves like these favorites of mine from Container Store to stay organized).

Next, use multi-functional furniture: Opt for furniture that can serve multiple purposes, such as a storage ottoman or a coffee table with hidden storage. This will help to keep the room uncluttered. An ottomon that has storage like this one I found on Amazon is great for saving space.

And not to be forgotten, use vertical space: Draw the eye upward by hanging shelves or curtains at a higher point. This will create the illusion of taller ceilings and more space. Mixtiles are a great way to decorate a wall with a personal touch.

Avoid heavy window treatments: Heavy curtains and drapes can make a room feel smaller. Opt for sheer or lightweight curtains that let in natural light.

Use lighting strategically: Good lighting can make a room feel larger. Use a combination of overhead and task lighting to create a bright, open feel.

Scale down on furniture: Choose smaller scale furniture, which will take up less space and make the room feel larger. Pieces like this bohemian inspired accent storage cabinet offers style and lots of storage!

Keep it simple: Minimalism is key when trying to make a small room appear larger. Keep decor simple and avoid cluttering the space with too many knick-knacks or artwork.

Use rugs: Rugs can define spaces and make them look larger. A rug can anchor a seating area and make it look like a separate room within a room. I highly recommend the Ruggable brand as they are machine washable!

Use furniture that can be tucked away: Consider using furniture that can be easily tucked away when not in use, such as a foldable table or a Murphy bed. This will free up valuable floor space and make the room appear larger. I have this table in my office and it can also be used in my kitchen for food or by my couch for working. And it's under $50!

Use floating shelves: Floating shelves can add storage and display space without taking up valuable floor space. They also give the illusion of more space because they don't touch the ground.

Keep the room organized: A cluttered and disorganized room can feel small and cramped.

.

for bedrooms, use a light-colored bedspread: A light-colored bedspread can make a small bedroom feel more open and airy. Avoid heavy, dark-colored bedspreads that can make the room feel closed in.

And finally, keep the room well-ventilated: Good ventilation can make a room feel larger and more open. Open windows and doors to let in fresh air, and use a fan to circulate the air.

By implementing these tips, you can create a visually larger space in your room and make it feel more spacious and open.

Happy decorating!
