How to prioritize what really matters

Updated: Nov 18, 2024

Daily Life Improvement Podcast

We all have our own lives to live and things to take care of, but sometimes it can be hard to make sure that we are making the time for what matters most. With so much on our plates every day - from work obligations, familial responsibilities, friendships, hobbies and beyond - how do we prioritize and stay focused on the important things? It’s easier said than done, but with a little bit of intentionality and self-awareness you can learn how to focus your efforts in a way that allows you to make lasting progress towards realizing your goals while avoiding burnout. In this blog post I'll share some tips for prioritizing effectively so that you're able to find joy in all aspects of your life without sacrificing mental or physical health!

Identify your core values - what is important to you and why

My faith is the cornerstone of my life, and it grounds me in all aspects of my daily journey. I believe in not only doing what is right, but also in having faith that no matter the obstacles, good will always prevail. Family is incredibly important to me; it constitutes a source of strength, unconditional love and acceptance that no one else can give. I strive to live my life with faith, courage and integrity, for this helps guide me on a path of growth and fulfillment. Whether it's faith-based or family-based - values like these are essential in order to make our lives meaningful and purposeful.

Make a list of activities or tasks that you can do each day that align with your core values

Having a plan for everyday that is inspired by your core values is an effective way to ensure you live each day to its fullest potential. Decide on activities or tasks that are important and meaningful to you, such as going for a walk to start the day off with some extra energy, or taking time out of your day to reflect and write down three main goals. Applying your core values will help create focus and purpose in whatever task you embark on - whether it's simple things like spending quality time with loved ones or tackling something difficult like writing a report for work. With some thoughtfulness and intention, you can identify activities or tasks each day that align with your core values and make sure your day isn't filled with unnecessary stress or lack of fulfillment.

Schedule time for yourself to relax and unwind from the day's stresses

Taking time for yourself amidst the chaos of life is essential to overall mental health and wellbeing. Scheduling dedicated time to relax, do something you enjoy, or just sit in silence for a few minutes breathing deeply can make a world of difference in your ability to cope with the stresses of everyday life. Even if it's just setting aside 10-15 minutes each day and acknowleding that it's all yours, having this dedicated break and not feeling guilty about taking it can be tremendously empowering. Whether through meditation, yoga, listening to music or reading a book - having intentional downtime should be part of your regular routine. You're worth it!

Evaluate each task, considering how much effort it will take and how much value it will bring in return

When it comes to tackling tasks, it is crucial to make sure that you weigh up the effort required to get it done against its potential value. Planning ahead and evaluating each task carefully will ensure that your efforts are best used; stretching yourself too thin by taking on seemingly endless commitments can be detrimental so try and focus your energy on those things which will be worth it in the end. Taking regular time for reflection, each day or week, can help keep you motivated and on the right track for enjoying a meaningful accomplishment. Make the most of every opportunity available!

Prioritize activities that have the most impact on your life and on those around you

Everyone has different priorities in life, but if you really want to make a difference in the world, then it’s important to focus your energy on activities that will have the most significant impact. Whether that’s volunteering with a local charity that provides education and essential medical care to those in need, joining an advocacy group that fights for justice and social change, or organizing fundraising campaigns for underserved communities - these are all meaningful ways of making a positive difference. Not only will these activities benefit those around you, it will also fill you with fulfillment as you witness the impact of your efforts. So set your priorities wisely and choose to spend your time on tasks that bring hope and joy into people’s lives.

Re-evaluate what matters when things change or circumstances arise

When life throws us a curveball, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and desire a return to normalcy; however, by re-evaluating what matters when things change or circumstances arise, we give ourselves the opportunity to adapt and grow. It is only through discomfort that we are challenged to better understand what truly matters, so accept the changes as an invitation for discovery rather than shying away from them in fear. After all, who knows what kind of exciting adventure awaits? Embrace the unknown and instead of wishing for the world we knew before, focus on unlocking new doors of opportunities.

By understanding and recognizing our core values, we can see how they shape and determine our lifestyle. We can ensure that we live our daily lives in alignment with these values, taking the time to identify activities or tasks that best support them. It is through this process of thoughtful decision-making that we can be intentional about dedicating ourselves to those things that are truly important to us. Re-evaluate your priorities when needed, making sure to schedule time for yourself, so you can acknowledge and embrace life's joys and challenges without feeling overwhelmed by it all. Now is the time to make a conscious effort toward cultivating a life you are proud of! What are YOUR priorities? Let me know in the comments below!
